Temple complex situated in Mingshan Mountain, close to the town of Fengdu, is called a “City of Ghosts”. Local people believe that this place is an abode of devils. The story brings us back to the times of Hang Dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD) when two officials, Ying and Wang, became Taoist recluses here and eventually Immortals. Then later during the Tang Dynasty their names were combined to mean “King of the Underworld”. Thereafter Mingshan Mountain gained its reputation as the “City of Ghosts “ where the king lived.

There are many people come here to visit temples and shrines dedicated to the Gods of the Underworld. Landmarks bear horrific names here, just have a look: Last Glance at Home Tower, Northing-to-be-Done Bridge, Ghost Torturing Pass. These are three trials for ghosts who wanted to enter the nether world. You’ll hear many superstitions concerning this place. We tell you just one, for example, people believe that a ghost who couldn’t stride across Northing-to-be-Done Bridge in three steps was considered as a virtuous man while those who couldn’t do that they were considered villains and they would drop down into the river below and would be deprived of a new life choice forever.

There is Shuangguishan Mountain reputed as This World Mt. and the Fairyland of Tranquility and Harmony just on the other side of the Bridge. This very place is sunken in lush greenery. The place is really worth visiting!
