Vladimir Afanasievich Obruchev

Vladimir Afanasievich Obruchev (1863-1956), the eminent Russian geologist, Academician, Hero of Socialist Labour (the highest honorary title in the former USSR). He wrote the classic multi-volume works The Geology of Siberia, A History of the Geological Researches of Siberia as well as the popular science fiction novels Plutonia (1924) and The Land of Sannikov (1926), the travel books Gold Prospectors in the Desert (1928) and In the Heart of Central Asia (1951). Obruchev was awarded the Przhevalsky prize, the large gold medal of the Russian Geographical Society, two Chikhachev prizes (1898 and 1925) from the French Academy of Sciences. His name was given to a mountain ridge in Tuva, a mountain in the upper reaches of the Vitim in Yakutia, an oasis in the Antarctic and to other geographical points, and also to the mineral "obruchevite".
