Johann Georg Gmelin
Johann Georg Gmelin (1709-55), Professor of Chemistry and Natural History.
He journeyed through Tobolsk, Semipalatinsk, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, Yakutsk, and back through Tomsk and Verkhoturye to St. Petersburg in 1733-1743, making vast collections in the taiga and tundra. In 1747-1769 the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences published his four-volume work, Flora of Siberia. In 1751 his diaries, Journey Across Siberia were published in
Gottingen and translated later into many European languages.
