SUBURBS. Nevyansk

It's an old town, so-called town-plant, situated 86 km from Yekaterinburg. It was founded in 1700 year. The hard war with Swedish kingdom took place at that time and Russia need much metal. Peter the Great gave an order to build plants in the Urals to produce guns, cannons and grenades for the war. The settlements rose simultaneously with metallurgical industry. Town-plant became a popular kind of settlement. Nevyansk was just such settlement by the first plant in the Urals. That's why it's called the grandfather of the metallurgical industry in the Urals. It was the state plant and new investments were required to wide the capacity of the plant but the state exchequer didn't have enough. And the plant was sold. The new owner of it became Nikita Demidov, a famous manufacturer of 18th century. He had to supply the state with guns of different kinds for 5 years. The town and the plant got the second life. The plant had the hugest and most productive blast furnace in the world. The cast iron from Nevyansk was so soft, smooth and had a good quality that people compared it with a sable fur. "The old sable" trade-mark of cast iron got recognition soon all over the world. The plant grew into the giant complex on processing of the Urals' wealth and production of various items: not only cannons and guns but bells, metallurgical equipment, crockery also.

The craftsmen of Nevyansk were the first in the Urals who deal with art casting from ferrous metals, making the unique Nevyansk icons (named after the town of Nevyansk), nice chests with ferrous binding and many other things.

If you go to Nevyansk town you'll see the whole Blast-Furnace Complex of the Plant of Nevyansk, the Inclined Stone Tower, the Cathedral of Transfiguration, the Museum of Local Lore (the exposition of the museum is exhibits, archeological items and documents showing the story of foundation and development of Nevyansky plant, Inclined tower; the museum offers the excursions to the Cathedral of St. Nicholas in Byingie village where you can see the unique specimen of Nevyansk icons).
