SUBURBS. Verkhotourie

It's the oldest town of the region, founded in 1598 according the order of the tzar Fyodor Ioannovich. 300 km from Yekaterinburg. The town had two main meanings for the state for two centuries.

From one side it was the religious and spiritual center of the Urals. 

You'll have a look at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity, situated on the territory of the Kremlin (XVII-XVIII), the third largest cathedral in Russia - the Cathedral of the Exaltation of the Cross (1905). The capacity of the Cathedral is 4 000 people. It's the example of huge cathedral of the beginning of XX century. The cathedral was remarkable for its many colorful faience iconostasis with icon painting in zink and Kasly casting. You'll visit the functioning monasteries such as Nikolayevsky monastery (1604) where the relics of the Saint Simeon of Verkhotourie are exposed and Pokrovsky Convent.

From the other side the town supplied the central part of Russia with furs, metal and jewels. The town had a half-official title such as the Gates to the Siberia. The town contributed to the foundation and development of industrial in the Urals. It was a first capital of the Urals.
