MUSEUMS. Peter and Paul Fortress (Petropavlovskaya krepost')

  • 3, Petropavlovskaya Fortress (Krepost')
  • Metro - Gor'kovskaya.
  • Open Thursday through Tuesday, from 10.00 am to 05.00 pm, till 04.00 pm on Tuesday.
  • Closed last Tuesday.

Most worth seeing are the Cathedral of SS Peter & Paul, with its landmark needle-thin spire, and Trubetskoy Bastion. All of Russia's pre-Revolutionary rulers from Peter the Great onwards, except Peter II, Ivan VI, are buried in the cathedral. The cathedral plain on the outside is radically different from traditional Orthodox churches, it has the Baroque interior. As for the Trubetskoy Bastion, Peter supervised the torture to death of his son here.

At noon every day a cannon is fired from the Naryshkin Bastion, scaring the day-lights out of the tourists. The Commandant's House is a museum of the History of St. Petersburg up to 1917 revolution, includes a room restored to its 1820s appearance.

The Peter and Paul Fortress is a complex of different buildings to see.
